For all the sense of fulfilment that comes with setting up and running a business, this also sometimes give way to stressful periods. So, as a business owner, or someone thinking about going into business, how can you combat this?

1. Plan what you’re going to do

Poor management of tasks and time is a huge cause of stress. Take a few minutes every morning to go over everything that you want to achieve in the day and then order these tasks by priority. If you are working on a particularly large project, break it up into manageable chunks that can then be tackled at different times. It’s amazing how much better this simple process will make you feel.

2. Remember to talk

Running a business can be isolating, especially if you have moved from working in a team to then going it alone. It is important that you have an outlet for any concerns that you have. Friends, family and former colleagues are always an easy option, but you could also consider finding a business mentor, someone with a greater degree of knowledge to guide you on the right path in your business adventure.

3. Keep active

Make sure you exercise daily, even if this just means stepping out and going for a brisk walk for 30 minutes. We were not designed to be sat in front of desks all day long; our minds need variety and activity. As well as the obvious health benefits exercising brings, your productivity will also improve. How many times have you struggled with a task, only to take a step back and then come up with an obvious solution?

4. Delegate where you can

We won't labour this point too much, as it’s likely that you don’t have a team at your disposal (yet!). However, if you are lucky enough to have support within your business, make the most of it - don’t try and take everything on yourself, make sure to share the workload.

5. Keep healthy

When you’re under pressure it’s easy to forget the obvious stuff like drinking plenty of water and eating the right foods. It can be tempting to start relying on ‘quick fixes’ such as caffeine and junk food. Whilst these are fine in moderation, don’t overdo it. This can have negative effects on your work (and body) which could lead to… you guessed it, stress.

6. Remember to breathe...

Put 5-10 minutes aside every day to do absolutely nothing. Sit back, close your eyes and slowly breathe in and out. This exercise will help you rest and refresh your mind, perfect for that piece of work you might be struggling with.

7. Take a break

Drive is a common theme behind all successful people, but it’s important to know when you’re overdoing it. If you’re staying up late every night to finish that report, presentation or whatever else - it’s going to have a negative impact on your sleeping pattern, disturb your social life and ultimately, affect your health. There will be times when you absolutely must finish something, but where possible try, to keep to regular hours.

There you have it, 7 small changes for business owners to fight stress. By putting theory into practice, you’re giving yourself the best possible chance of managing stress.
