Ahead of this week’s Think/Forward event, Peter Thomas of the Leasing Foundation discusses their ambitious plans for the next generation of business finance professionals.


The Leasing Foundation, is a non-profit industry organisation, led by board members from senior positions in several leasing and asset finance companies, including LDF.

Together, they are committed to creating innovative development programmes designed to develop the next generation of business finance professionals.

One such programme is the Leasing Foundation’s ‘Future Leaders’. Unlike many company-led leadership courses, it aims to develop a diverse range of skills and abilities needed by industry leaders of the future.

The programme is about understanding the complexity of the leadership challenge in practice. We help leaders of the future see behind the theory of being an effective leader. In a world where change is the norm, disruption is everywhere, and the needs of the workforce are changing, leaders need to be more self-aware. The Future Leaders programme helps them become the leaders they need to be.

The programme focuses on business life. It asks participants to share perspectives through action learning, provides executive coaching, and offers the opportunity to network with existing senior leaders. On the conclusion of the year-long programme, participants become alumni, allowing these individuals to continue to grow their industry network.

Peter Alderson, managing director of LDF says:

Businesses can nominate rising stars for the programme, helping to nurture talent at source, however, the Future Leaders programme is just one part of the mission to develop the business finance industry. It also runs a Diversity and Inclusion initiative helping businesses to understand the commercial advantages of a diverse workforce. Through research, training and development, the initiative provides knowledge and frameworks to support diversity.

Peter continues, “The Foundation is making excellent progress in addressing on diversity across the board and there’s no doubt that with their help, we are creating an industry that will be very attractive to the next generation as we move forward.”

The Foundation has also set its sights on a broader education and development framework, creating the first postgraduate degree in Leasing and Asset Finance, offering those who might not have an initial degree, but who have significant industry experience, providing the opportunity for personal and professional development.

In addition to this, in 2018 the Foundation will launch the Certified Asset Finance Professional, an industry-wide programme that both recognises and rewards the achievements of thousands of business finance professionals.

The aim is very much to attract, retain and develop the brightest business financiers who will in turn, help tens of thousands of UK businesses grow and prosper through access to lending.
